Appeal launched after vandals ruin new Walsall pond

Walsall Council has launched an appeal for information after a revamped pond in Leamore Park, Walsall, was ruined when its lining was ripped out and destroyed. 

A project to improve the previously 'unusable' pond was completed on March 17, turning the site into a usable place for toddlers, children and families to enjoy. 

However, on the following day March 18, the Walsall Council healthy spaces team arrived to find the pond had been vandalised.

The site, which is surrounded by a fence that is locked overnight, was to host sessions for toddlers to enjoy pond dipping, exploration and to learn about nature.

During the vandalism, the pool lining of the pond was ripped out and destroyed causing the water to completely drain into the ground below.

Councillor Gary Flint, portfolio holder for health and wellbeing at Walsall Council, said: "Situations like this are quite frankly demoralising. So much good work has been carried out here to create something for our children in Walsall to enjoy. 

“I can’t thank the businesses who come forward and help us deliver projects like this enough.

"We want everyone to take pride in the borough and our surroundings. I would encourage residents to consider how they can support their local parks and green spaces."

The work was carried out by Starmac Surfacing Ltd and was completed through Walsall Council's corporate social responsibility initiative.

Councillor Flint added: "We also need everyone to take a stand against antisocial behaviour.

The council added that the incident has been reported to West Midlands Police.
