Carlton Betts, 28, denies he was driving the stolen car which mounted the pavement and killed Darren Whitehouse on St Mark's Road, Tipton, on February 27, 2021.
However, Betts did not turn up to the first day of the trial at Wolverhampton Crown Court yesterday (Monday) and his whereabouts is unknown. He previously attended to plead not guilty to death by dangerous driving.
Judge Simon Ward told jurors at Wolverhampton Crown Court that Betts absence would not stop the trial going ahead.
