Influencer-Doctor Aziza Sesay to tackle 'period shame' at TedxWolverhampton

Social media sensation Doctor Aziza Sesay is set to tackle the stigma around gynaecological health when she appears at Wolverhampton's TedX event this weekend (April 5).

The GP, Educator, and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer, will be delivering a talk titled "They are not bad words! – How shame and stigma is costing lives."

Dr Sesay, who is recognised for her educational social media videos featuring models of the female anatomy, will speak  about the stigma around women’s and gynaecological health by normalising the use of anatomical words like "vulva" and "vagina" and overcoming cultural taboos. 

She will discuss why this shame exists and why inclusion in the health space for minority groups and how social media is being used to further perpetuate shame.

In a post about her upcoming appearance, the medic said: "I’m super excited and can’t wait to share my talk entitled 'They are not bad words- How shame and stigma is costing lives.' 

"If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ll know this topic is very close to my heart. I’m ecstatic that it will be shared on such a huge platform as @tedx_official as it means it will reach more people and impact (possibly save) more lives.

TEDxWolverhampton's show 'Curiousity, Chaos & Creativity' will be at the Arena Theatre, Wolverhampton on Saturday (April 5) from 9.15am. 

Other speakers include Kerry Tidman, a profoundly deaf school counsellor at Q3 Academy Tipton with her talk 'How do you deaf?',  Nysha Chantel, a PhD candidate for the University of Wolverhampton, who will discuss representation of Black working-Class community and  Paz Heer, a renowned cake artist based in Wolverhampton, who will discuss creating wonderous edible art.
