'It's heartbreaking': Staff and volunteers in emotional farewell to beloved Walsall community project

Tears were shed at a much-loved community garden in Walsall in the final days before it was forced to close its doors to volunteers and employees.

Goscote Greenacres Community Garden, which has become a victim of the cost of living crisis, held a barbecue on Friday (March 28) for people who have either worked there, volunteered or are trustees of the charity, plus allotment holders and the general public who enjoy the open space.

Garden manager Paul Mason said it is unsustainable in its present form, with costs rising including National Insurance contributions for employees, which have seen wages at a level of £5,000 a month but only £1,500 - £2,000 coming in.

Paul has been in charge for 13 years, managing 60 small plots of land at Goscote Lane, supervising staff and running a volunteer program for adults with learning disabilities who grow vegetables and plants to sell to the community.
