Byron Sellick, 20, is charged with murder, attempted murder and possession of a shotgun alongside with Julian Falconer, 20, and Jake Sanbrook, aged 23, at Wolverhampton Crown Court.
Sellick took the witness stand at Wolverhampton Crown Court to give evidence in his defence and denied knowing Brookes would be shot in Well Lane on July 8, last year.
When giving his version of events to the jury, he said: "We had been chilling. When we got to Well Lane, I was looking out of the window and saw the two people in the van fall down.
"One of the kids in the van fell on the side, like he passed out. And then the other kid, his head kind of went sideways. It is mad to explain."
