Police were called to Hednesford Road, near Rugeley, to a report of a serious collision at around 4pm on Saturday (March 22).

A grey Land Rover and a grey MG were involved in the crash.

The driver of the MG, a man aged in his 40s, died at the scene, a Staffordshire Police spokesperson said.

His family are said to be receiving support from specially trained officers.

The driver and passengers in the Land Rover were taken to hospital with injuries believed to be minor.

Hednesford Road resident, Alfie Mantel, was travelling home with his family shortly after the crash happened.

He said: "We were driving back from Cannock Wood-way and there was a police diversion on the road so we had to go a different way.

"It's hard to hear sometimes. We were coming back that way. We drove in separate cars, my mum and dad were ready before me, so if they hadn't waited for me to leave they might have been in it."

The 21-year-old told the Express & Star some motorists travel down Hednesford Road above the 30 mph speed limit - and said something "definitely" needs to be done about it.

He explained: "Pulling out of the drive sometimes, you see people doing 40 or 50 mph down this road.

"Last year we had two more accidents up the road where two more people died. Some people have been taken to hospital.

"I was speaking to my mum and apparently quite a while ago there used to be a speed camera down by the roundabout because there had been a big crash on the roundabout as well, so some sort of speed camera or something would help."

The fatal crash on Saturday is reportedly not the first to have occurred on Hednesford Road.

Residents told the Express & Star a motorcyclist died on the corner of Stile Cop Road, at its junction with Hednesford Road, a few months ago.
