Police investigating after person pronounced dead on rail line near Rugeley

A person has died on the rail line near Rugeley Trent Valley station.

Police, paramedics and fire crews were called to reports of a casualty on the tracks in Rugeley just after 6.30am on Thursday (March 20).

A person, whose gender has not been identified, was pronounced dead, a British Transport Police spokeswoman said.

The force has confirmed the incident is under investigation.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman confirmed crews were called to an incident on the tracks near to Station Road in Rugeley at around 7.20am.

The spokeswoman said: "One ambulance and two paramedic officers attended the scene. 

"Upon arrival we found one patient. Sadly, it was clear that nothing could be done to save them and they were confirmed deceased at the scene.” 

All rail lines were closed as a result of the incident but have since reopened.

Rail passengers including those travelling between Stafford and Lichfield Trent Valley have however been warned services could still be cancelled, delayed by up to 45 minutes, revised or diverted.

National Rail said disruption is expected until 4.30pm.

Avanti West Coast customers have been advised they can use their tickets at no extra cost on London Northwestern Railway or West Midlands Railway services on any reasonable route and Chiltern Railways services between Birmingham Moor Street and London Marylebone.

London Northwestern Railway passengers can travel on Avanti West Coast services between Crewe and London Euston or on Cross Country services between Birmingham New Street and Tamworth or Nuneaton.
