A member of the public contacted police just before midnight on Christmas Eve, 2023, with intelligence about a firearm.

Officers linked two men thought to be involved, Jermaine Vassell and Kiyran Delaney, to a car which activated number plate recognition cameras in south Birmingham.

The vehicle was tracked by firearms officers but it failed to stop for them. A short pursuit ensued but the car was brought to a halt on Quarry Lane in Northfield.

Both Vassell and Delaney tried to escape but were chased and caught by officers.

The driver fled the scene but police investigations later identified him as Rayhan Hurd.

Officers recovered a blank firing revolver which had been converted to fire ammunition.

A search inside the vehicle also found further ammunition.

All three men went on to plead guilty to possession of a firearm and ammunition.

At Birmingham Crown Court last month Delaney, aged 21 and of Cumberland Road, Walsall, was sentenced to six years in prison.

Vassell, aged 20 and of Chaddesley Road, Birmingham was sentenced to eight years in prison.

On Tuesday (February 18), Hurd, aged 26 and of Wollescote Forge Mews, Dudley, was sentenced to six years in prison.

DC Sean Grove, from the West Midlands Police Major Crime Team, said: “This case shows how seriously we take reports of firearms, and highlights the work we’re doing to keep the public safe from them.

“From our initial intelligence, brave actions by firearms officers and our extensive investigation – we have taken a dangerous weapon and ammunition off the streets and brought those responsible to justice.

“If you have any information about people with weapons, you can report it to us anonymously and we will take action.”
