Salma Rafique was crossing Thorns Road, Quarry Bank, on September 29, 2023, around 8pm when she was mown down by Tyrone Moran.

The 19-year-old drove away from the scene and his car was found abandoned shortly afterwards.

Later that night Moran handed himself into a local police station.

Moran was jailed for six years and nine months at Wolverhampton Crown Court on Friday after pleading guilty to causing death by dangerous driving.

Judge Michael Chambers KC sentenced him after a lengthy legal Newton Hearing which debated the circumstances of the crash including the traffic on the road at the time.

Salma, aged, 27, had been walking across a pedestrian crossing when she was hit.

Despite the best efforts of paramedics she died at the scene.

Within hours, flowers adorned the site of her tragic death.

Judge Chambers also banned Moran, of Holcroft Road, Oldswinford, from driving for five years.

Thorns Road has been a blackspot for speeding and crashes for several years and was the subject of a 2,000 name signature demanding traffic calming measures including reintroducing speed cameras.

Stourbridge MP Cat Eccles has demanded action. She said: “Safety measures on this stretch of road are well overdue. Incidents are an almost daily occurrence along the route and I do not want to see any more lives lost.

"We are calling on the PCC and West Midlands Mayor to work with Dudley Council and local police to prioritise average speed cameras along the entire A4036 and reduce harm on Thorns Road.”
