It is a thriving suburb to the west of Wolverhampton, now very much part of the city.

But old images reveal how Penn grew from a quiet village, when its main Penn Road - now a busy dual carriageway - was little more than a country lane.

Today we take a look back into the Express & Star archives, of landmarks and views that many will recognise from today and others that have long gone.

They include the old Rose and Crown, a quaint building that has since been replaced by a modern Sizzler pub under the same name.

Other landmarks, like the Battle of Britain pub, have disappeared completely, as has the old tollhouse on the Penn Road.

Some of the images date back the early 20th century, some include wartime bomb damage, and others are more familiar scenes from the 50s, 60s and 70s.

Take a look through the pictures and see what you recognise from the past.
