Sunil Bange lived over the road from The Roebuck, Penn and was a regular customer at the pub, although he had been banned from the premises for a short time.

Wolverhampton Crown Court heard the landlord of the pub who lived upstairs, came downstairs to make a coffee overnight on October 31, 2023 and smelt burning.

He then noticed a glowing underneath one of the two exit doors, saw it was alight outside and identified a figure he thought was Bange stooping outside the door before he left.

The landlord managed to extinguish the fire and reported it to police who went round to where Bange lived, at nearby Manor Close, and found him asleep in bed with traces of flammable liquid on his clothing and a man-bag with a lighter in it.
