Football supporter due for sentence over offensive post about West Bromwich Albion fan’s Hillsborough death

A football supporter who admitted posting offensive remarks on social media after a West Bromwich Albion fan collapsed and died is due to be sentenced.

The case relates to the death of Baggies fan Mark Townsend, aged 57, of Oldbury, who collapsed at Hillsborough stadium on September 28.

Sheffield Wednesday fan Richard Crisp posted the message on X, formerly Twitter, in the wake of the death of Mr Townsend which made reference to the 1989 Hillsborough disaster. He is due to be sentenced on Friday.

The 55-year-old previously admitted posting an offensive social media message at Sheffield Magistrates Court where he his due to be sentenced tomorrow.

Prosecutors said Crisp, of Lennox Road, Hillsborough, was making reference to the 97 people who died following the crush at the ground.

Mr Townsend, of Farm Road, in Oldbury, passed away after taking ill at the away game against Sheffield Wednesday

Meanwhile the inquest has been opened and adjourned in relation to Mr Townsend's death. His family have raised concerns over the length of time it took for him to receive emergency aid.
