Sandra Shaw, a 59-year-old retired retail worker, enlisted the help of specialist dental negligence solicitors the Dental Law Partnership.
The payment was awarded after she experienced the loss of two implants shortly after treatment. This led to a gap in her mouth which makes it difficult to eat, and she hardly smiles due to a lack of confidence.
Mrs Shaw was a patient of Dr Kenneth Moylan at Wollaston Dental, High Street, Wollaston in 2021-2022.
She said: “I first visited Dr Moylan as I had a gap in my tooth after a crown of 34 years fell out.
"I was unhappy with the appearance of my teeth and saved up money to get implants done.
“Dr Moylan placed two implants in my teeth in February 2022 and fitted implant retained crowns on them in May. But he made a mess of it.
“A month later I lost one of the implants as a screw was loose and it fell out. He then also messed me about with appointments, cancelling on the day of them, and giving me excuse after excuse about what went wrong.
“I decided to go to another practice to get it looked at. A few months later in September, I then lost the second implant crown. The other practice re-cemented this one, but I’ve still got a gap from where the first implant fell out.”
Frustrated with the experiences she had gone through, Mrs Shaw contacted the Dental Law Partnership in 2022.
Further analysis of her records revealed the extent of the poor dental treatment Mrs Shaw received from Dr Moylan, where the implant site wasn’t adequately assessed, and the dentist should have recommended bone grafts before putting the implants in.
He also placed inappropriately sized implants on insufficient bone. This led to the loosening of the screws, failure of the implants and requirement for bone grafting in future, all of which could have been avoided.
Mrs Shaw continued: “I’ve lost my confidence with the gap in my mouth. I’m so self-conscious I hardly smile anymore. It’s also difficult to eat on my upper left side,”
"It was a stressful experience. When you pay someone you trust and think will do a good job, it builds your hopes up. And it’s very frustrating when that doesn’t work out and they don’t do it right, especially after you’ve spent so much money.”
Tim Armitage of the Dental Law Partnership commented: “The distress and pain our client has experienced was completely unnecessary. If the dentist involved had provided more satisfactory treatment, her problems could have been avoided.”
