Motorists heading into Wolverhampton will be unable to enter the city centre via Darlington Street until July as the road will be closed to traffic in both directions between Waterloo Road and Chapel Ash Island.
Wolverhampton Council put out a message to say that the works, which begin at 7am on January 20, are due to city centre public realm improvements and explained that both vehicle and cycle access was closed.
The message said: "Whereas Wolverhampton Council, being the highway authority for Darlington Street are satisfied that traffic should be restricted because works are being or are proposed to be executed on or near the road namely to allow City Centre Public Realm Improvements.
"Now therefore the Council in exercise of their powers under Section 14(1)(a) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 as substituted by the Road Traffic (Temporary Restrictions) Act 1991 and all other enabling powers do hereby make the following Order.
"No person shall cause any vehicle to proceed on Darlington Street in both directions between its junctions with Ring Road/Chapel Ash Island and Waterloo Road/School Street. Darlington Street Cycle Lane also closed between the junctions of Ring Road/Chapel Ash Island and Red Lion Street."
National Express West Midlands also alerted travellers that due to the closure of the road, a number of bus services would be diverted.
A spokesman for National Express West Midlands said: "From Sunday, January 19, Darlington Street will be closed between Waterloo Road and Chapel Ash Island for approximately six months.
"During this time, services 1, 3, 4, 10, 10A & 711 will be diverted."
