With the deadline in place for January 15, councils sent out a final call to parents and carers to apply for reception class places for children who will be starting school for the first time in September.

The final applications can be made up until 11.59pm on Wednesday, and can be made for schools in Wolverhampton, Walsall, Sandwell, and Dudley.

The schools and colleges page on Gov.uk lists all of the highest performing schools in each area, based on whether the pupils are meeting or exceeding the standard of work expected by them.

Pupils are meeting the expected standard if they achieve a scaled score of 100 or more in their reading and maths tests, and their teacher assesses them as 'working at the expected standard' or better in writing.

Each school included also has an overall Ofsted rating of ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’. This means that the quality of education provided, student behaviour and attitudes, school leadership and management and student safeguarding were all found to meet or exceed government standards last time the school was inspected.

Here are the top three schools in Wolverhampton, Sandwell, Dudley and Walsall.

Wolverhampton

1. St Bartholomew's Church of England Primary School

The Sedgley Road school is part of St Bartholomew's Multi-Academy Trust and has been named one of the best primary schools in the country, with 95 per cent of students meeting the expected standard.

The academy was ranked as Outstanding in it's most recent Ofsted inspection in November last year.

2. Oak Meadow Primary School

Also part of St Bartholomew's Multi-Academy Trust, Oak Meadow was voted Primary School of the Year in 2023 and continues to hold high status with 84 per cent of its students meeting or exceeding expected standard.

Oak Meadow's headteacher, Mr Paul Lane, says the children are at the forefront of everything they do.
