The RSPCA executed a search warrant at the Cosford Grange Farm Shop complex in Albrighton, where they found 1,946 animals including Congo grey parrots, tortoises and more than 400 leopard gecko lizards.

Zulkernam Shah, aged 39, appeared at Shrewsbury Crown Court for sentence. He ran the operation with his then wife Claire Shah and another co-defendant.

The court was told how the animals were living in “inhumane” conditions, with some neglected live animals in cages next to dead ones, with faeces, urine and food.

Parrots were described as “malnourished and in a state of stress”.

“A great number of animals suffered a great deal of harm,” Recorder James Bromige told Shah. “It was an unlicensed commercial operation.”
