Actors and sportspeople all come from the Sandwell market town. With this in mind, we’ve taken a look at the most famous people who were born and bred in Oldbury.
1. Keith Downing
Downing is a former footballer and football manager who is an assistant coach at EFL Championship club Blackburn Rovers. He made most of his playing appearances for Wolverhampton Wanderers.
2. Darren Harriott
Darren Harriott is a British stand-up comedian from Oldbury. He was nominated for the Best Newcomer Award and Best Show Award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2017 and 2019
3. Mick Aston
Born in Oldbury, Aston was a archaeologist who specialised in Early Medieval landscape archaeology. He was widely known for appearing as the resident academic on the Channel 4 television series Time Team from 1994 to 2011
4. Omar Bogle
The Crewe Alexandra forward was born in Oldbury and was a youth product of West Bromwich Albion, before playing for Birmingham City and Celtic
5. Clive Brunt
Clive is an actor. Born in Oldbury, some of his notable performances are in BAFTA-winning Dunkirk as Pvt. Alf Tombs , Daniel Kramer's Woyzeck at The Gate theatre as The Sergeant, and later reprising the role at St Ann's Warehouse, with Edward Hogg, David Harewood and Roger Evans.
6. Duane Courtney
Courtney has played for Birmingham City, Derby and Burnely. He currently plays for Highgate United.
7. Martin Elliott
Martin Elliott was a Oldbury-born photographer who became famous following the classic Tennis Girl photo. The photograph was taken by Elliott in 1976 and features Fiona Butler, his girlfriend at the time. The photo was also taken at the University of Birmingham's tennis courts. In 1978 it achieved widespread distribution, selling over 2 million copies.
