The McArthurGlen Designer Outlet West Midlands in Cannock was a busy place on Boxing Day, with traffic seen queuing back onto the adjacent A460 and onto the nearby dual carriageway.

Inside the outlet, parking spaces were at a premium as drivers queued to get in, while people could be seen carrying large numbers of bags from the different stores inside, including from Boss and Calvin Klein.

It was a busy scene inside the outlet, with plenty of shops having opened at 8am to welcome in customers and most doing a roaring trade throughout the day.

The different food outlets were also busy, with plenty of people inside Slim Chickens and Five Guys taking a break from the shopping.

The scene at the McArthurGlen Designer Outlet West Midlands wasn't typical of the rest of the region and the country, however, as new figures have found that Boxing Day shopper footfall was down 9.4 per cent from last year across all UK retail destinations, up until 12pm.

Footfall had fallen by 10.2 per cent on UK high streets, 6.8 per cent at retail parks and 10.1 per cent in shopping centres, compared with 2023.

Last year, footfall across all destinations was up 2.8 per cent from the same time period in 2022.

Consumer analysts MRI Software said much of the 2023 spike was led by high street activity, which rose by 5.1 per cent.
