A town centre pub has to do a lot to be able to compete with its neighbouring pubs to become a place that people want to drink in and want to keep coming back to.

On a weekend night, these pubs are competing for customers and how the place appears, the beer it provides and the welcome it gives can all be crucial to a pub's popularity, custom and existance.

One pub which has made itself popular for drinkers in Bridgnorth is the Golden Lion on the High Street in High Town which, after a substantial refurbishment in 2017 after being bought by Holden's Brewery, has become a destination for a good pint.

The 17th-century coaching inn is a traditional pub which, upon entry, has separate public and lounge bars, with pictures on the walls of the pub detailing its history over the last 400 years.

It has been run for the last two years by manager Joanne Wall, who said she had moved to Shropshire from Hull after marrying a local lad.

She said: "I've been in the pub trade for 27 years and took over here from the previous manager two years ago as I'd been working at the White Lion and fancied a change after the Covid pandemic.
