'Every day I am reminded I was shot in the face by someone I was trying to help ten years ago' - Blinded former Staffordshire police sergeant speaks out
The Staffordshire police sergeant blinded after being shot in the face at point blank range ten years ago is reminded every day the shocking result of trying to help a mentally ill man.
Sergeant Jon King spent five hours pleading with Matthew Tearle to surrender peacefully after responding to a call from paramedics at Matthew Tearle's Rugeley home on October 19, 2014.
Tearle's mother and brother also appealed to Tearle to give himself up.
However, in a wanton act of violence which would change both men's lives forever Tearle shot father of two Jon twice in the face at point blank range.
Sergeant King lost an eye and the majority of his sight in the other and was forced to retire from the job he loved.
Paranoid schizophrenic Tearle was arrested and has been detained in secure mental health units ever since.
On Thursday a hearing at Stafford Crown Court was held to renew the hospital and restriction order which ensures Tearle cannot be released.
