West Midlands Police said the weapons were confiscated after officers armed with a warrant visited the youth's Perry Barr home in May this year as part of Operation Target and found two handguns.

The force said tests found one of the weapons viable and that the defendant's DNA was on them.

On November 29 he was sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court to three years and two months after pleading guilty to two counts of possession of a firearm.

He cannot be named due to being aged under 18.

Dc Corey Short, of the force said: "Firearms play a significant role in criminality on our streets. It persistently erodes communities, ruining lives and blighting communities.

"Weapons have no place on our streets and we will continue to bring those to justice who think it’s acceptable to use them to bring violence into our communities."

Operation Target was launched to tackle serious and organised crime.
