Lorna Langford says every time it rains her cellar in Brierley Hill fills to the brim. She has told how it smells like damp, with the walls and steps caked in mould and the floor lined with dirt and grime - so much so that you can't see the actual floor at all.

She says the problems began in 2022, when a sinkhole opened up in the middle of Brick Kiln Lane in Quarry Bank. It was just a small sign of a bigger hole beneath, measuring about 6ft deep by 10ft wide. The area was surrounded with safety fences and left for about a month, with residents begging local authorities to 'take responsibility'.

Lorna said since she has lived there in the 13 years preceding the sinkhole, she has 'never had any problems' in her home, which stands just a few feet away from where the road caved in.

"Initially I didn't put the problems to the sinkhole," said the 65-year-old.
