Councillor Simran Cheema, Natalie Latham and Klara Margetts jointly launched the online petition earlier this month.
The three councillors want to see more ‘innovative thinking’ around the market, and have called on the council to consult with residents to form a ‘dynamic’ market strategy. So far, the petition has over 350 signatures.
Councillor Simran Cheema said: “I’ve got a feeling they might close down Willenhall Market. Willenhall has always been a traditional market town but it’s been neglected once again.
“Shopping habits have changed, a lot of people shop online and they don’t use local amenities. The council’s approach should change as well.
“They should be doing more to attract traders, not putting barriers in place. Willenhall has a lot to offer, with the new housing and train station.
“We’ve asked for a mixed use of the market place. We want innovative ideas such as car boot markets, farmers markers, continental markets. It’s about getting the best for our town.”
Walsall Council is carrying out a review into its markets to save money ahead of its 2025/26 budget. Events specialist Market Curators is working with the council to develop a plan for Walsall, Willenhall and Bloxwich markets.
Residents have already been invited to have their say over the market in Walsall town centre. The council has promised to engage with residents and traders about the Willenhall and Bloxwich markets in the New Year.
Councillor Adrian Andrew, deputy leader and portfolio holder for economic growth and regeneration at Walsall Council, said: “The way we shop and the way our communities use high streets and town centres is changing. Consumer shopping habits have changed and moved online, and our markets need to move with the times and adapt.
“Now is the right time to launch a full and detailed review of our markets which will inform investments into our Future Markets Strategy. Street markets still have a vital role to play, and we want to ensure our markets are destination events and play an important cultural, social and economic role.”
