Staffordshire area coroner Daniel Howe opened the inquest of Paul Michael Jillings who was found dead at his home in Kendal Court, Cannock on August 1 this year.
The 59-year-old was found with traces of Tramadol in his system, the coroner said.
Adjourning the inquest, he said: "Given the facts as they are so far I can't rule out the possibility of a conclusion of death by unnatural causes."
