More weather warnings in place for ice tomorrow - and for a wet weekend ahead

Drivers particularly are being warned to take care as the temperatures drop from later this afternoon, into the night, and tomorrow morning.

The Met Office warning covers the West Midlands, from Walsall and Wolverhampton, stretching west through Telford, Shrewsbury, Bridgnorth, Wem, Whitchurch, and Oswestry, into Mid Wales, affecting from Welshpool on towards Newtown and Llanidloes.

The warning says: "Icy stretches are expected to form on untreated surfaces during Wednesday evening and overnight into Thursday as temperatures drop below freezing. A few sleet or snow showers are also likely at times, particularly close to coasts."

The advice from the Met Office is to be ready to take longer to get anywhere - be it on foot, or by vehicle.

The update says: "Plan to leave the house at least five minutes earlier than normal. Not needing to rush reduces your risk of accidents, slips, and falls.

"If you need to make a journey on foot, try to use pavements along main roads which are likely to be less slippery.

"Similarly, if cycling, try and stick to main roads which are more likely to have been treated.

"Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary."

The warning comes after two days of snow impacting people across the West Midlands, Shropshire, and into Mid Wales, with schools closed and the roads proving treacherous due to slippery conditions.

While there may be some respite from the snow and ice on the way, the warnings over the weather switch to rain for much of Shropshire and Wales on Saturday and Sunday.

A yellow warning for rain is in place for the area throughout the weekend, with the Met Office update saying: "A deep area of low pressure is expected to bring a spell of prolonged and, at times, heavy rainfall across a large part of the UK this weekend.

"Across Wales and western England, rain and hill snow is expected to develop during the early hours of Saturday morning before falling as rain to all levels by late morning and continuing through to early Sunday morning.

"50-75 mm of rain is expected to fall fairly widely with 100-125 mm of rain over higher ground, particularly in south Wales."
