The Post Office has announced that 115 branches are being axed across the country putting 2,000 jobs at risk and causing a major blow to high streets.
Critics fear the move will also leave pensioners and the vulnerable at risk of isolation.
Post Office chairman Nigel Railton made the announcement shortly after 9am today during a meeting with staff.
But some front-line postal workers say they were left in the dark about the news, according to the Daily Mail.
The shake-up could see the branches transferred to retail partners or postmasters or shut for good.
“The Post Office has a 360-year history of public service and today we want to secure that service for the future by learning from past mistakes and moving forward for the benefit of all postmasters,” said Nigel Railton, the chair of the Post Office. “We can, and will, restore pride in working for a business with a legacy of service, rather than one of scandal.”
“Post offices are an integral part of the communities they serve and the services they provide for local people,” a spokesperson for the Department for Business and Trade said. “The government is in active discussion with Nigel Railton on his plans to put postmasters at the centre of the organisation and strengthen the post office network for its long-term future.”
A Post Office spokesperson told the Express & Star: “We are considering a range of options to reduce our central costs. This includes considering the future of our remaining Directly Managed Branches, which are loss-making. We have long held a publicly-stated ambition to move to a fully franchised network and we are in dialogue with the unions about future options for the DMBs.”
Several national newspapers have listed all the 115 Post Offices they say are set to close.
The good news is that none of them are in any of the four Black Country boroughs, or neighbouring Staffordshire or Wyre Forest. However Birmingham is listed.
