Kickboxer Ellie Harbinson visted The Way

Sporting star Ellie Harbinson stopped by at Wolverhampton's The Way Youth Zone to reveal her secret of success.

The special visit came as part of a series of female empowerment sessions which launched at the School Street hub last year.

Harbinson, who is from Wednesbury, said: “It was great to be invited down to The Way and see the amazing facilities that they have here.

"I had an amazing night with the young people, and they have some talented boxers. I also loved working with some of the young people who had disabilities and they made my night.

"It’s great to encourage all genders and abilities to get involved with boxing and I hope I have empowered some of them by sharing my journey and experiences - I can’t wait to come back."

The kickboxer, who was quizzed by young girls at the youth club, revealed the struggles she faced attempting to break into a male-dominated sport.

She then jumped into the ring with the youngsters before flaunting her skills when she went against one of The Way's boxing instructors.

Suzanne Huynh, communications manager at The Way, said: “We wish Ellie the best of luck with her boxing career.

"Her energy and enthusiasm was great with our young people. I think many of them could relate to her, with them being a similar age and they enjoyed hearing of her successful journey as a female boxer.

"We have launched these female empowerment sessions here at The Way, as we feel it is important for our young people to learn about strong female role models within our society and we look forward to hosting more female empowerment sessions with successful women from all walks of life.”

The Way, which celebrated its third anniversary earlier this month, has now invited Harbinson to return to its base to work with the young people.

Last year, award-winning author Kit de Waal and broadcaster Vick Hope were welcomed into the centre as part of the sessions.
