The pair are expected to be honoured 'in recognition of their eminent services to the city of Wolverhampton and public relations'.

Wolverhampton council's Standards Committee has recommended the pair are made Freeman of the City, with the decision set to be made at a full council meeting on March 28.

A report to the council said: "It is the most honourable distinction that a city can bestow."

A celebratory event for the pair, along with hand-decorated freedom scrolls made from vellum, will cost about £3,000.

Cash will be used from existing budgets set aside for hospitality and equipment purchases within democratic services, the council said.

Olympic gold medallist Denise Lewis, former Wolves president Sir Jack Hayward and cyclist Hugh Porter are among those previously bestowed with the honour.
