Young carers in the Black Country praised by West Bromwich MP
Young carers looking after loved ones in the Black Country were given a festive boost during a special visit.
MP for West Bromwich Tom Watson stopped by at Sandwell Young Carers to praise the charity for its work.
He met with young people and their families whose lives have been transformed thanks to the Bratt Street-based group on December 8.
Mr Watson, who is also shadow secretary for digital, culture, media and sport, said: "I was delighted to join the staff and young people at Sandwell Young Carers to see for myself the good causes that National Lottery funding has made possible.
"This fantastic charity gives young people the opportunity to find solutions to the challenges they face, improving their confidence, self-esteem and wellbeing."
Sandwell Young Carers has received more than £650,000 of National Lottery funding since 2006 to provide support to young people who care for a dependent family member.
The charity, which provides guidance for young people aged five to 18, has worked with more than 2,500 people through homework clubs, respite breaks and peer mentoring.
Tracey Hawkins, chief executive office of Sandwell Young Carers, said: "This was an excellent opportunity for us to showcase the work we do, as a result of the National Lottery funding, to one of our local MPs.
"It was a chance for our young carers and their parents to share what this project means to them, and the differences it has made to their lives.
"There was a real buzz from the young carers, who were thrilled at the opportunity to meet and greet our VIP guest."
The Big Lottery Fund is responsible for dishing out 40 per cent of cash raised by National Lottery players to good causes across the country.
Last year, almost £713 million was awarded to support nearly 14,000 projects focusing on areas including health, education, environment in the UK.
