Fantastic Wolverhampton foster carers praised for giving children a home
A TROUPE of 'fantastic' foster carers have been praised for opening up their loving homes to the city's vulnerable children.
Celebrations were held to recognise a 46-strong group of foster carers who have stepped up to the role in Wolverhampton.
A host of awards were dished out to dozens of the foster carers at Wolverhampton council's 'For the Love of Fostering' award ceremony.
Councillor Val Gibson, the council's cabinet member for children and families, said: "We are very lucky to have so many fantastic foster carers in Wolverhampton who combine a desire to help children with a commitment to providing the best possible care and support for them.
"I was delighted to be able to present awards to these very special people and to have the opportunity to personally thank them for their efforts on behalf of our city's children and young people."
The council's Fostering for Wolverhampton team handed accolades to the foster carers at Ramada Park Hall Hotel earlier this month.
Opened by Deputy Mayor of Wolverhampton Councillor Phil Page, the glittering evening saw Councillor Gibson present honour the award recipients alongside director of children's services Emma Bennett.
Foster carers who had dedicated the past 10 to 30 years to the city's vulnerable children and young people received awards.
Other awards were handed to residents for their 'outstanding' commitment to looking after youngsters with disabilities and teenagers, as well as foster carers who had taken up the role more recently.
Foster carers, who can be single, married or in a relationship, are needed to take in children in the city currently waiting for a home.
Councillor Gibson added: "I would urge anyone who has considered fostering to speak to our Fostering for Wolverhampton team to find out more about this life-changing role."
Foster care placements can vary in length, with carers receiving a regular tax exempt fee and allowance to cover the cost of bringing up the child.
The Fostering for Wolverhampton team provides round-the-clock support, while first-time foster carers receive six months 'buddy support'.
