David Humphries stumbled across the collection of brooms as his team prepared to demolish Wednesbury's Spear and Jackson factory.

The 65-year-old is now on a mission to brush off the dust and hand the wooden sticks to charitable causes which can adapt the brooms for their supporters.

Mr Humphries said: "We found these brooms in there. We put them into one of our warehouses in Wednesbury and forgot about them about 10 years ago.

"We sold the warehouse they were in and moved the brooms out. I thought the nice thing to do would be to give them to charities.

"I thought possibly charities for disabled people could use them. The brooms could be cut to suit them."

The father-of-two uncovered the broomsticks as his company Humphries Demolition Ltd tore down the St Paul's Road tool factory a decade ago.

Wednesbury resident Mr Humphries hid them away for safe keeping but forgot he needed to get rid of the broomsticks in his shop.

The former managing director, who retired three years ago, said the wooden sticks are now sitting firmly in the back of his trailer ready for charities and community groups to claim them.

But he is hoping the broomsticks will only fall into honest hands and not find their way onto a market stalls for cash.

He added: "They are not your standard broomsticks, they are a better quality. A lot of them are made from ash.

"I hope they are going to do somebody some good rather than make somebody money. But I don't know anybody who would want 1,000 broomsticks."
