The death in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter is being treated as unexplained. Roads around the area were cordoned off and the tram service between the city and Wolverhampton was curtailed.

British Transport Police were called to St Paul’s station, the stop before Birmingham Snow Hill , at around 5.30am to reports of a man on the tracks.

Police are working to establish the identity of the man and how he came to be on the line.

A spokeswoman for British Transport Police said: “BTP officers were called to St Paul’s tram stop following reports a man had been struck by a tram.

“Officers discovered the body of a man shortly after 5.30am. Inquiries are now under way to identify the man. The incident is currently being treated as unexplained.”

Part of Constitution Hill, one of the main routes north out of the city, was sealed off and trams were terminated in Winson Green as officers investigated the incident.

Midland Metro tweeted: “Due to a police incident, trams are running between Priestfield and Winson Green only.

“No trams between Grand Central and Winson Green. Police incident is ongoing.”

The line reopened at 10am but with delays to the service.
