Shock as reveller dies in fall after night out with friends
Traders have spoken of their shock after the body of a 25-year-old man was found at the back of a nightclub in Cannock, after falling from the top of a building while on a night out with friends.
The discovery was made in a secure yard off the Market Place behind Quartz Bar on Saturday morning.
Police say he had been at a ‘local nightclub before going out to a smoking shelter’ and then falling from a 40ft high building into a secure yard.
Inspector John Ward, from Staffordshire Police, said: “He was last seen by friends in a nearby nightclub and then at a smoking shelter before being found in a yard deceased and sadly he had fallen.
“There were no reports of a disturbance or fight that had taken place.
“The incident has been referred to the Health and Safety Executive and work is still ongoing to track his final movements and talk to key witnesses. This is a tragic incident and specially-trained officers are supporting his family at this time.”
Quartz Night Club said that they were very sorry to hear of the tragedy.
A spokesperson for the club said: “We are complying with police at the minute in providing them with the relevant CCTV to help with their enquiries and detail the man’s last whereabouts. We are very sorry that something so tragic has happened and our thoughts go out the family at this sad time.”
Traders spoke of their shock, saying that a woman found the man at around 8.30am.
Joe Davis, from Cannock Market Hall, said he first heard about the incident when arriving to set up.
He said: “Police were outside when we arrived and it was cordoned off where I usually park my van. At first I thought maybe a robbery had taken place at the bank but when I heard that a person had died I thought how sad. There’s a lot of speculation at the minute.”
Another trader added: “A woman found the body and was incredibly shaken up.”
Police cordons remained up to the rear of the nightclub near to the multi-storey car park on Saturday afternoon.
Barclays Bank was also closed throughout the morning.
Councillor Maureen Freeman, who represents the Cannock South Ward, said she was ‘incredibly sad’ to hear about what had happened.
She added: “It is awful to hear that something like this has happened. The circumstances may not be clear at the minute but nevertheless a man has died and this is incredibly sad.”
It is thought late night revellers in the town could have vital information to help the police inquiry. Anyone with information should call 101 quoting incident number 201 of August 19 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
