Now Walsall-born actor Jeffrey Holland is donning the gold-piped maroon jacket of the Grimley Brass Band to play conductor and ex-miner Danny in the upcoming production of Brassed Off at Wolverhampton's Grand Theatre.

It will be a happy return for the 70-year-old actor, a former pupil of Queen Mary’s Grammar School, who worked at a wine merchant and in an office in Walsall before enrolling at a drama school in Birmingham and giving up his steady job for the stage.

He last trod the boards at the Grand two years ago playing the station master in the comedy thriller The Ghost Train.

And last year he unveiled a statue at Walsall Arboretum commemorating one of town’s most famous sons, author Jerome K Jerome.
