Queen Square plan then - and now

It provided a vision to a landmark building in a city centre - but did it turn out to be true?

Queen Square in Wolverhampton proposal in 1975

The part-architect's image of Queen Square in Wolverhampton shows a new 'impressive frontage' of the Lloyds Bank.

And fast forward more than 20 years, the building looks close to the redevelopment proposal.

The one thing which is different - the position of the Prince Albert statue, which is now further down Darlington Street on the square.

The plans, put forward in 1975 by Horton Developments of Birmingham, show redeveloped Lloyds Bank.

In an article in the Express & Star at the time, it states: "Gone is the decaying facade of the former Queens Ballroom and the impressive frontage of the existing Lloyds Bank."

It continues: "The scheme is particularly important because it lies within the recently designated Queen Square conservation area."
