Passers-by helped pull one of those involved from the car after the accident, on Leamore Lane at about 11.10pm last night.

Three ambulances were among the emergency service vehicles sent to the scene.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman Murray MacGregor said: “On arrival, ambulance staff found a car that had suffered extensive damage.

“Unfortunately, one of those in the car was found to be in cardiac arrest. He was pulled from the vehicle with the help of other road users who had stopped and advanced life support was carried out by ambulance staff but sadly it was not possible to save the man and he was confirmed dead at the scene."

The two other people in the car were left with serious multiple injuries and taken to Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital by ambulance.

No one in the lorry was hurt.
