The lights were in place yesterday at the junction with Sandon Road, with some drivers reporting tailbacks of up to three miles.

Severn Trent Water said they were working on the leak last night and have apologised for any inconveience.

A spokesman for the firm said: "We received reports of a water leak in the early hours of the morning in Sandon Road, Beaconside. We went out to investigate and we will be carried out repairs in the evening, to minimise disruption.

"In the meantime, in order to keep everybody safe we're using temporary traffic lights. We're sorry for any inconvenience this has caused local residents and we'll be working as quickly as possible to repair the leaking pipe and get everything back to normal."

Stafford MP Jeremy LeFroy alerted residents to the problem on twitter.

He said: "Beaconside - water main burst by underground HV power cable; temp lights @ Sandon Rd junction causing delays. Work likely to take some days."
