London Midland routes between Wolverhampton, Walsall and Rugeley to Birmingham New Street were all affected after a signalling problem between Perry Barr and Tame Bridge Parkway.

Network Rail spokesman Jon Crampton said signalling was lost around 5.10pm this evening.

He said: "Engineers are at the scene assessing what the problem is and will look to get the line running again as normal as soon as possible.

"We can't say when that will be yet but we apologise to anyone affected by the delays this evening."
