Shift supervisor and keen fisherman David Brown, aged 44, and his wife Dawn, a 41-year-old PA, from Penkridge, admitted they nearly did not buy their £1 million-winning Euromillions raffle ticket because the queue was too long.

They had stopped off at Asda in Queensway, Stafford, to do some shopping after taking son Jack to his weekly swimming lesson.

"I saw the queue and thought I couldn't be bothered to wait but Jack ran straight over to the kiosk because he loves to scribble on the lottery tickets so I just joined the line.

"If it wasn't for him, you could say this wouldn't have happened," said Mr Brown.

Cannock-born Dawn, who works at aerospace company Moog in Wolverhampton, said they were still coming to terms with their new-found wealth. But both have pledged not to give up their jobs.

"This is going to make life easier but life is going to carry on pretty much as before – just without the worry," she said.

David, who has worked at Smethwick steel company The Hadley Group for 26 years, spoke of the moment in the staff canteen when he discovered they had won.

After starting work at 6am, he checked the numbers during a break half way through his shift.

"I noticed I had the two lucky stars at first but then realised I hadn't any of the other numbers. Then I looked at the millionaire raffle code and thought hang on, I've got the first three, no four, and I looked across all nine to realise I could be a winner." He asked colleagues to check his phone because he was 'shaking like a leaf'. He said: "In fact the next couple of hours are a blur."

The avid Wolves fan called Camelot to check they had won before phoning his wife of 20 years to reveal the news.

Dawn, who was born in Chadsmoor and grew up in Stafford, made him drive to her office to show her the ticket before she would believe him. David, an accomplished coarse fisherman who is part of Walsall-based team Maverick Midlands, plans to spend some of the cash on new equipment.

In 2002 he was flown to Spain on a private jet to compete in the prestigious Embassy Pairs fishing competition and won the top prize of £2,500.

They are no strangers to winning on the Euromillions Lottery either, it emerged. But the £67 hand-out just before Christmas hardly compares, said Mr Brown. "All the things you wish for are now possible for us, things like paying off the mortgage, getting a couple of cars, no longer worrying about bills and going abroad on holiday."

The Wolves fan, who was was brought up in Fallings Park in Wolverhampton, said the couple love their home in Penkridge and have no plans to move.

Dawn, a keen horsewoman hopes to buy a new horse. They picked up their cheque at a special press conference at The Moat House in Acton Trussell.
