The new shop will open its doors at the Chase Centre off Church Street this Thursday.

Bosses from B&M today said they had been waiting for three years to open a branch in the town and they have moved quickly to snap up the Lidl unit. The vast majority of the 79 jobs have gone to long-term unemployed. B&M received 1,200 applications for the posts.

The news is a boost for the town after a trio of blows. High street favourites Burton and Evans closed on May 4 while Thorntons is also due to close this month.

Operations director Carl Allen from B&M said: "We have been waiting for an opportunity in Cannock for three years and are delighted to have secured this site."

Budget supermarket Lidl, which stands on the retail park near McDonalds and Blockbuster, closed in March.

B&M has 331 stores across the country, up from just 20 stores six years ago.

In the last three years, it has been opening an average of one new store every week.
