Customers in Barclays Bank managed to disarm the man and were today hailed for their bravery by police.

The 49-year-old entered the branch in Brook Square with the machete before he was tackled by customers.

One man suffered a hand injury during the incident but did not need hospital treatment.

Police were called at around 2pm yesterday and the man, from Rugeley, was arrested and is being questioned.

Det Insp Paul Bentley said: "It doesn't appear there were any demands for money but the man was acting in an irrational and violent way. The incident was diffused by brave members of the public."
