Boost as 200 jobs created at Rugeley Amazon
Two hundred jobs have been created at Amazon's giant warehouse in Rugeley, it emerged today.
Temporary workers who were taken on at Christmas have now been given permanent jobs with the internet shopping retailer.
The company took on 1,000 extra workers at the 800,000sq ft centre towards the end of last year – and a fifth of these have now been given permanent roles.
Catherine McDermott, director of UK operations, said: "We're delighted that so many of our top performing temporary associates have now joined us on a permanent basis.
"Amazon has invested over £1 billion in its UK operations including our fulfilment centre in Rugeley where hundreds of employees focus every day on providing an exceptional experience for our customers all over the UK, Europe and the world."
Mrs McDermott added that Amazon was committed to opening further UK warehouses over the next two years, creating an extra 2,000 permanent positions.
The online retailer opened its huge base at Towers Business Park, next to Rugeley Power Station, in September 2011. It was opened by Prime Minister David Cameron and initially brought 900 jobs.
Geoff Martin, Rugeley town councillor and Staffordshire county councillor, today welcomed the new permanent jobs as "fantastic news".
"So many people are doing online shopping now, it really is the big thing and especially when the weather is like it is now, it stops people going out in it," he said.
"It's wonderful news for Rugeley and for the wider area."
