Hundreds of jobs on the way at Alstom
Hundreds of new jobs are to be created in Staffordshire and Wolverhampton after power company Alstom secured £565 million in orders.
The firm is looking to take on 570 new workers nationwide following a successful six-month period. A total of 203 positions will be created at the Stafford-based Alstom Grid division.
It already employs 2,000 people at Lichfield Road in the town and is currently working on a £400m power contract for India.
It also needs to find 202 staff in Alstom Power and 165 in Alstom Transport, which has a base in Jones Road, Oxley, Wolverhampton. It is not yet known exactly how many of those 165 positions will be based in Wolverhampton.
Alstom UK president Steve Burgin said today: "This has been another successful six months for Alstom in the UK, with some major contract wins and an impressive order book.
"However, the long-term health of the company relies upon the Government establishing policy frameworks that encourage investment by our customers, and so investments in Alstom products and services.
"If we see that, then we can create even more skilled jobs, many in the new industries such as offshore wind and carbon capture and storage."
Alstom in the UK had sales of £600m for the half year, which were slightly down compared to last year.
The French parent group had total orders of £9.7 billion, up 19 per cent, for the half year. Sales were up four per cent to £7.7bn and net income rose 11 per cent to £323.2m.
