Stafford remembrance service to be moved to new venue

The main Remembrance Sunday service in Stafford is moving to a bigger venue this year to enable more people to attend.

The poignant annual event has previously been held at the 800-capacity St Mary's Church in Stafford town centre.

However, last year's organisers said there were more than 1,500 people attending the event, with the congregation spilling out into St Mary's Gardens and neighbouring footpaths. It meant those left outside were unable to see or hear what was taking place inside the church.

Now the borough council, clergy and Royal British Legion have moved the service of remembrance to Victoria Square, which is home to the Borough War Memorial.

The service on November 11 will be followed by wreath-laying and a parade.

Graham Fowell, rector of St Mary's, said: "It is wonderful to see so many people giving up their time to honour those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

"But it has outgrown the traditional service inside the church, and, so that we could make sure everyone who attends can feel a part of this beautiful and moving service, we have changed the venue."
