Swimming lessons at Cannock pool put back until November
Families will have to wait until November for swimming lessons to start at a flagship new pool in Cannock – and in a double blow have been told prices will rise.
Parents have been informed direct debits for the lessons, at Chase Leisure Centre, will not be taken from their accounts in October.
An exact date has not yet been given for the opening of the new 25-metre pool, however contractor GF Tomlinson has advised Canock Chase Council that the project will be ready to hand over next month.
Council leader George Adamson today said it was expected to be late October.
Based on the revised timetable a swimming lesson schedule is being planned for November.
An update on the delay has been given to parents in a letter from Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, which took control of the Stafford Road pool earlier this year.
They were also advised of an inflation price rise.
Trust swimming co-ordinator Gez Hill said there had not been an increase since January 2011.
"This is part of a planned review of prices and it is always WLCT's intention to keep the Aqualife swimming programme affordable and good value for money."
The revamped competition-standard pool should have opened on August 8 after a 16-month shutdown but hit last-minute technical problems.
The difficulties came to light when workmen heated the filled pool and found that the expansion caused by the rise in temperature put stress on the joints, resulting in cracks.
Clubs have been forced to book alternative pools during the delays.
The new pool will boast a moveable floor which can be highered or lowered to create different depths.
