£20k shortfall fear as Midnight Walk numbers drop

The number of walkers signed up to take part in a vital fundraiser for a Staffordshire hospice is significantly down for the second year running – with organisers predicting a £20,000 shortfall.
Almost 1,000 women completed the annual Midnight Walk in aid of Katharine Hospice in Stafford in 2011, raising £50,000. But organisers are expecting little over half that number to take part in next month's event, blaming cycling's success in the Olympics and other competitions.
They say interest in cycling events is on the increase and proving stiff competition for the 10k walk on September 8.
Hospice spokesman James Lunney today appealed for more women to come forward and register before the September 3 deadline.
So far, just 350 have volunteered to take part compared to 500 at this stage last year and 850 the year before.
The decline in numbers reflects a UK-wide trend, which also shows the emerging popularity of cycling challenges. Hospice bosses are hoping for a last-minute rush to sign up.
Mr Lunney said: "Last year there was a late surge in registrations, with another 250 signing up after returning from holidays and other summer breaks.
"Although there were fewer people taking part, walkers raised higher individual sponsorship totals.
"This year's event is still going to raise £25,000 to £30,000 which is amazing."
Around 500 people took part in the hospice cycling event in May, a huge increase on previous years.
"We are in touch with other groups around the country and they are experiencing similar patterns," added Mr Lunney.
