Visitors enjoyed seeing birds of prey, working dogs, children's entertainment, arts and crafts, as well as sampling food from the marquees.

A record 100 stallholders had pitches at the event at the event which also boasted a goat show featuring milking and cheese-making, a jousting tournament and owl displays.

Colin Fielding, aged 48, was dressed as a British Red Coat soldier as part of Anglo-Zulu war display group which tells the story of the battle from the 19th century.

He is part of the group called Ibutho which is based in Essex.

He said: "I've been five years in this sort of business.

"We have events in most parts of the country and there is always enough interest to fill them. Matt and Ellen Tranter, both aged 37, travelled to the show from their home in Cannock.

"We've done all the stalls and watched the dog show and really enjoyed it," Mrs Tranter said. "We've had two barn owls at home and so that's a particular interest for us with the birds of prey. They've been hand-reared.

"I enjoyed today – it's quite good – but I think perhaps there could be more events as well."

Emma Owen, spokeman for Oakleigh Fairs said: "We've had a really good weekend and had record numbers."
