A major road in Smethwick was closed this morning after a woman was hit by a car. She suffered serious injuries when she was struck, in Telford Way.

The collision happened just after 8am this morning. Telford Way was closed in both directions between Kenrick Way close to junction 1 of the M5 at West Bromwich and Tollhouse Way, while police investigators assessed the scene.

A bronze coloured Nissan vehicle which hit the woman remained at the scene this morning. No arrests have been made, but police now want to speak to another car driver who witnessed the accident before driving off.

Traffic officer Sgt Steve Newbury who was at the scene this morning, said: "A 21-year-old local lady has been in collision with a car at the crossing on Telford Way.

"She has been taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham with serious injuries. The family have been informed.

"We are appealing for the driver of a large silver vehicle which stopped shortly after the collision and then left the scene to come forward with information."

A nearby resident who did not want to be named, said: "I saw all the traffic come to a complete stop at around 8am this morning."
