A report into standards of care at Stafford Hospital will be presented to Health Secretary Andrew Lansley on October 15, it emerged today.

The date is a key milestone following the 13-month public inquiry into standards at the site.

The inquiry examined the role of regulatory bodies after a report found cases of poor care at Stafford between 2005 and 2008.

Chairman Robert Francis QC will hand over his findings to Mr Lansley prior to the report being published.

Lyn Hill-Tout, chief executive of Mid-Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust, said: "We do not know when the report will be made public.

"We have plans to support staff and explain to patients and the local community about the changes that the trust has made."

The inquiry began in November 2010 and concluded its hearings at the beginning of December last year.

The Accident and Emergency department at Stafford is currently closed overnight. It was closed amid fears of staff shortages. It is expected that A&E will reopen in October.
