An eight-year-old boy was fighting for his life today after coming off his bike in Rugeley. He was taken to Birmingham Children's Hospital with a head injury.
His condition was described as "very serious".
Paramedics called to Burnthill Lane at 7.40pm yesterday said there was no suggestion a car had been involved, although they added that the circumstances were unknown.
Ambulance service spokesman Murray MacGregor said: "When ambulance staff arrived, they found an eight-year old who was not fully conscious and had suffered a head injury.
"Due to his condition, the ambulance staff decided that the best option was to airlift the youngster to the paediatric major trauma centre at Birmingham Children's Hospital.
"Medics were on standby for his arrival after the seven minute flight, but unfortunately, his condition was very serious."
A rapid response vehicle, ambulance and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Staffordshire were sent to treat the youngster.
He was taken to Birmingham Children's Hospital.
Today, there was no sign of the incident in Burnthill Lane, which is a hill and a main thoroughfare in the town just off Horse Fair.
Staffordshire Police said officers attended the scene of the incident.
